JV Golf’s First Few Matches by Charlie DeYoung
April 9th, 2024 was JV Golf's First match. Mr. Smit has been picked as the JV golf coach this year and really enjoys seeing how many people want to play and get better. Mr. Smit coached from 2007-2014, and he took his teams to states almost every year and won it all. He and his team were up 2 strokes on a rainy day and sadly lost states from this. They had wanted to change the date because of the bad weather, but the other teams didn't care and they had to play. Back then, Coach Smit had varsity players who were locked in and always putting the work in. This year the JV team is trying to lock in, but we all could use some work.
On this day JV Golf did their first match and the players were: Carter, Walt, Mason, Brighton, Lance, and Noah C. They went to The Pines Golf Course, which is extremely narrow and only good if you have a straight slice. Our first seed was Noah Conklin, he has been playing golf for almost 2-3 years now and is switching between JV and Varsity. Noah shot a 49, which was 13 over and wasn't that bad. Noah had 18 putts, which is normal and 18 chips, which is also normal. The rule in golf is 2 putts per hole.
The second seed was Carter Miller, this is his first year playing golf and already seems like he understands every drill. He shot a 51, which was 2 behind Noah and ended with +15. He got 17 putts and 16 chips, which is under. That means he has worked with the irons.
The third seed was Lance, he's a freshman and has been playing for a few years. He shot a 52, which is +16. He got 19 Putts and 21 Chips and needs some practice on those 2.
The Fourth Seed was Walt, he's a freshman but has been playing golf for a few years. Walt shot a 49, which is 13 over just like Noah. He had 17 putts and 16 chips. He is going to be good for Saugatuck Golf in the future.
