2023's BiggestTrends by Charlotte Gardner
The year is coming to an end, and it is safe to say that 2023 had an abundance of trends regarding social media, fashion, shows, music, etc. A lot of trends that teens participated in got their popularity from TikTok or Instagram. Looking at Saugatuck, a lot of people caught onto the biggest trends this year.
To start, there were a lot of fashion trends that took the world by storm. One show trend that seemed to stick around the whole world was the UGG Tasmans, which were seen on everybody’s feet all year round. TikTok took a toll on a lot of people’s opinions, such as the idea known as the clear-girl aesthetic, which meant dressing simple but still giving the idea that you are dressed nicely. Lastly, a trend that has caught attention in the last few months was wearing bows on your clothes and/or hair. This was popular for teen girls, especially around holiday time.
Some trends were on everyone’s For You Page on TikTok. One that got a lot of attention throughout the summer was the McDonald's Grimace shake. This was the idea that people would drink the Grimace shake and get sick and post a TikTok about their experience. Junior Carter Miller had his own experience with the Grimace Shake, he says, “It's a fun challenge, I’m not gonna lie. It spread throughout TikTok very fast. Me and my buddies thought it would be fun to make a video. Overall, the whole challenge was fun; it was sticky but gave us a lot of funny memories.”
Another TikTok trend that seemed to be very popular was, how often do you think of the Roman Empire? What started as a question that wives would ask husbands, or daughters would ask dads, turned into events that had happened in people’s lives that they thought happened and had an effect on their lives.
Some music that became popular throughout the year was Taylor Swift’s re-recorded albums, and the 2 that were announced and released were Speak Now and 1989. She was also on tour gaining a lot of fame, and her new romance with Chiefs player Travis Kelce sparked the interest of her fans. Drake also dropped an anticipated album, For All the Dogs; this album had many features and it was very popular among teenagers. Lastly, up-and-coming artist Olivia Rodrigo released her second album, GUTS, and gained fame through TikTok as well as shows throughout America.
