Saugatuck Gearing Up For Spring Break by Julia Lowery
With spring break coming up, Saugatuck Public School is buzzing with the excitement of getting a week off of school. Although the countdown has just begun, and there are still a couple of weeks to go before school gets out, it doesn’t stop the chatter about people's plans for the week-long respite.
To Michiganders, Spring Break is sacred. As a break between the Eeaster holidays, spring break gives students and teachers a week-long break right at the start of spring. Although it's been around since the 1800s, the tradition still runs strongly throughout schools across the US.
Vacations during spring break vary all over. Some seek to get away from the chilly Michigan weather and head down south to Florida, California, or even as far as Mexico or Jamaica. Others head out west for hiking, skiing, and other outdoor activities. But whether you're staying home to just relax and enjoy break, or heading to a whole other country, many can agree that spring break is a much-needed hiatus from school.
After interviewing students and teachers, one thing is clear: ; everyone needs a break from the stresses of school. With the start of the last trimester, it seems as if everyone is just trying to make it through to summer. Ava Tringali gives insight about how she will be spending her break:, “I'm spending my spring break in Cabo with my parents and sister. We'reWere just chilling out on the beach along with hiking, horseback riding, and shopping. I can’t wait to have a break from academics.” Even those who aren't going to somewhere as exotic as Cobo are looking forward to a pause in the school year, like Mrs.Lewis. “I'm going to stay home, take my dog on lots of hikes, and save money for my new furnace. I’m looking forward to chilling out at home because I haven't done that in three years.”
While some are tanning on the shores of Cobo or chilling at home, others have jam packed schedules for their break. 10th grader Mazie Robinson has a different type of vacation in mind compared to others. “For spring break, I’m going to travel all throughout Europe. I'm most excited to go to Prague and hang glide there. I'm very excited, I haven't been out of the country much, so it should be very fun, and very eventful.” Lily Lokker has a similar plan in mind: “During break, I’ll be visiting the Netherlands and I’m really really excited. My family and I are traveling all across the Netherlands. I'm most excited about going to Amsterdam, where we are visiting Anne Frank's house. It’s an 11-hour flight there, but it will be so worth it.”
No matter how far or wide they’re traveling, the students and staff of Saugatuck Public Schools are gearing up for a fun spring break. It seems everybody is excited for a break from school and maybe even a little bit of an adventure.
