Mylah Simpson by Jenn Schock
Mylah Simpson is a new Freshman this year. She and her family moved from a small town called Belding, MI. Mylah’s opinion on Belding is not the most uplifting. She says, “If you’re born in Belding, you’re accepted. If you’re not born in Belding, you’re not accepted”. Mylah also said that there wasn’t much to do there.
Mylah was homeschooled while she was living in Belding, so there are a lot of differences between her prior and current schooling. Coming to Saugatuck means in person education and being surrounded by other students. While living in Belding, Mylah knew the students that went to the school even though she was homeschooled. Her older sister, Brook Simpson, was a junior, so she would meet and hear about a lot of people. Mylah really emphasized the differences between the kind of people who are here and who are at Belding. For example, “Saugatuck is way more welcoming and people actually want to get to know me”. Mylah says that Saugatuck makes her want to learn and understand the curriculum; when she was homeschooled, she didn’t have that much homework.
Mylah was also asked what her favorite thing here is so far. “Basketball.” She did not hesitate with that answer. She loves the community and the culture that is being created. She also preached that the basketball team is very welcoming. She gets so excited to go to practice every day.
One of Mylah’s challenges being here is school itself. Mylah expressed how different the environment is and the time schedule she has now. When she was homeschooled, she was on her own time schedule, now she’s on someone else’s. She personally prefers her own time tables, but loves the teachers here.
Mylah is looking forward to getting a 4.0 by the end of the year. She also wants to go to states this year with her basketball team.
Some of Mylah’s hobbies include dancing. She danced for a long time and then she got into basketball. Even though she loves basketball, she still loves to dance on her own. She shared how she is learning how to play the keyboard.
