Upcoming NHL All Star Festivities by Novella DeGraaf
The annual NHL All-Star weekend is slowly drawing its way closer and fans could not be happier. It takes place this Saturday, February 3, 2024, hosted in the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. The All-Star game is a competition where the best, hand picked, players in the league show off their skills and talents in a large competition. Players will be separated into teams of four. Each team will consist of a captain, an assistant captain, and a special celebrity captain for this year's events. These teams will then go on and choose up to 11 players total to be on they’re team, 9 of them must be skaters while the other two will be goalies.
The NHL leagues chief content officer stated in an interview, “Starting 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend with a tripleheader of events at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto is a new and exciting way to showcase the talents and personalities of the World’s best player.” This event is just supposed to be a great time for everyone to enjoy hockey as a community and have a great time. The three main events that will be occurring and broadcasted on live television include Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Player Draft, NHL Alumni Man of the Year, honoring the 1967 Toronto Maple Leafs, and finally The Canadian Tire Professional Women's Hockey League 3-on-3 Showcase that has been an annual tradition of the All Star game since 2016.
On February 1, 2024, there will be a All-Star Player Draft where the team captains and celebrity captains will choose from a pool of players to create their ultimate team roster. These players consist of not just players who were chosen by the NHL Hockey Operations Department to play, but also players who were chosen by the fan balloting. Fan surveying was done earlier this month to decide who was going to additionally be put into the All Star game.
There will be four main teams presented this year. Team Mattews has, of course, Toronto Maple Leafs Center, Auston Mattews as captain and defenseman Morgan Rielly as the assistant captain. Also a part of this team will be global superstar Justin Beiber as the celebrity captain for team Mattews, representing with the blue All-Star jerseys. The next team, team McDavid, will have Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid as captain, Leon Draisaitl as assistant captain and Toronto-born actor, Will Arnett as the celebrity captain. They will be represented with the white All-Star jerseys. The third team, team Hughes, will be led by New Jersey Devils center Jack Highes as captain. However, he will not be participating in the on-ice events due to an injury so his brother Quinn Hughes will take his place when playing on the ice as captain. Elias Perrerson will be the assistant captain along with the grammy award winning Michael Bublé as their celebrity captain. This team will be proud to wear the red All-Star jerseys during the game. Last but not least, the final team, team MacKinnon led by Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon as captain, teammate Cale Makar as assistant captain, and famous Canadian singer Tate McRae as celebrity captain.
