Varsity Girls Soccer by Mariela Garcia
This year for varsity soccer, there is a new coach: James Theis, but the girls call him coach Jim. Coach Jim is a former USA (United Soccer Athletes) travel soccer coach. In the past, he coached U17 Premier Girls. This year, varsity hopes to come back stronger, as they are trying to make it to district finals-again, like last year. This year they have hopes of winning districts.
So far, the season is off to a good start. The practices involved lots of bonding: getting to know the new coach and the incoming freshmen. So far the first tryout/practice went great.
Upon talking to lots of players on the team, they have said that they can't wait for soccer season to start. The first game for the girls varsity season is a scrimmage against West Ottawa, at West Ottawa. Last year, WO had a record of 11-9-2, and Saugatuck had a record of 17-3-0. So it will be a good game to watch, seeing as we lost lots of seniors last year.
This year, the players on varsity and jv are still being decided, but everyone has been playing and working hard at every practice. Whoever makes it on those teams are there because they worked harder and pushed themselves to become better every practice.
After practice, Coach Jim asked everyone in the huddle to raise their hand if they had learned something new in these past two days of practice. Only a few raised their hands, after everyone lowered their hands, he said: “I should see all your hands up, because even if you think you knew it all or anything else you probably learned something, and you didn’t even know it because practice will always make you better.”
The schedule for this season has lots of big schools and teams, but the girls are able to take on any one of the teams and try their hardest at every game. The girls will push in the games and at practice to make sure that we have fun, and try to play the intense game.
