Drew Nyboer by Ben Schoonmaker
Drew is in 7th grade and this is his first year going to Saugatuck. Last year, he attended Hamilton Middle School, which is about twenty minutes East of Saugatuck. He transferred to Saugatuck because his mom recently had a house built in the area.
Overall, Drew’s experience at Saugatuck Public Schools has been pretty good so far. He is enjoying it here, and he appreciates the learning environment. He also says that he is learning more at Saugatuck than he did at Hamilton. Currently, his favorite course is health class. Drew’s favorite thing to eat during the school day is the ribs made in the cafeteria. Rather than packing stuff from home, Drew chooses from the food options in the cafeteria to make his lunch.
Drew also has a couple of literature and film favorites. Drew enjoyed reading White Fang, a fictional novel that explores the themes of morality and redemption and is centered around a wild wolfdog who experiences kindness from his owner after being abused. As far as film goes, Drew’s favorite movie is Top Gun and his favorite TV show is Seinfeld. While Drew doesn’t do any school sports for Saugatuck, he does Taekwondo in his own time.
Something Drew is looking forward to in high school is going to the Careerline Tech Center. The Tech Center prepares students for the future by offering a variety of options through career and technical education. Drew hopes to learn and train in welding and mechanical skills at the Tech Center. After graduating, he plans to use his training and skills to become a diesel mechanic. This profession specializes in repairing and maintaining diesel-powered appliances and vehicles.
Getting to know Drew's thoughts about Saugatuck and hearing about his interests both in and outside of school was a positive experience. I hope he continues to learn a lot in Health and in his other classes. Meanwhile, I’m excited for him to master skills at the Careerline Tech Center when he reaches high school. If you have Drew in any of your classes, get to know him if you can. I’m sure he would be happy to meet more Saugatuck students.
