Red Wings v Anaheim Ducks by Novella DeGraaf
This past Monday, on December 18, 2023, the Anaheim Ducks hosted the Detroit Red Wings at the Honda Center, known as the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim. This was their first game this season against the Red Wings. As of right now, the Red Wings are placed 19th in the league and the Ducks are placed 29th, clearly giving the Red Wings better odds of winning because of their placement. However, the final score beat the odds and turned out to be 4-3, with the Ducks taking the win by a slim margin.
In the first period, the Ducks got out of the gate strong with the first goal coming from Defenseman Radko Gudas. This was his fifth goal this season, with a deep shot in their offensive zone into the goal. After a couple more shots from each team, the Defensive rookie Pavel Mintyukov got in a shot from the back to get another point on the board for the Ducks. The Ducks then continued on their streak, getting a third goal in the first period. However, this time it was from Cam Fowler, another Defensiveman, who scored with a redirection into the net. This made the final score of the first period 3-0, with the Ducks leading.
In the second period, the Ducks were relentless, not giving the Red Wings a chance to score. Right wing Troy Terry got a rebound from another player, shooting it into the net to get their fourth goal. Finally after almost a whole period of not scoring, the Red Wings began to make their comeback. With lots of confusion, Defensiveman Jeff Petry got a free long shot from the line, going straight into the goal with no interferences, scoring the first goal for the Red Wings. In another attempt to score, Petry goes for a wrap around the goal; however, he was not quick enough, getting stopped by a Defensiveman. The final score of the second period was 4-1 with the Ducks still leading.
In the final (third) period, with a perfectly lined up pass from Patrick Kane to Alex DeBrincat, DeBrincat scored a tight shot, getting the second goal of the night for the Red Wings. That was not all though. DeBrincat then went on to score yet another goal in the closing minutes of the game, possibly giving the Red Wings a chance to come back and tie it up. However, that did not happen, with the closing score of the game being 4-3 and the Anaheim Ducks taking yet another win.
Although the Ducks had won with the strong lead they acquired early on in the first period, the Redwings did make an admirable comeback in the second and third period in order to get a closer game in the final minutes.
