Lions Tackle Packers on November 6th by Madison Haddock
On Sunday, November 6, the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions went head-to-head at Ford Field. With both Aaron Rodgers and the offense faltering in the red zone, the result was a Lions victory of 15-9.
In the first quarter, the scores both remained at 0. While the Lions did drive a ball 55 yards, Green Bay held its ground in the red zone. The Lions intercepted 3 throws total. This, along with many interceptions from both teams, made for a tie in the first quarter.
During the second quarter, the Lions made their first touchdown. Shane Zylstra made the touchdown, the first in his career. This touchdown was converted to two, and instead of six points, they earned eight. No other points were scored during this quarter.
The third quarter kicked off with the pass from GB’s Aaron Rogers to Samouri Toure being stopped by Kerby Joseph. Up to this point in the game, Rogers had faced 3 interceptions, which appeared to leave him very frustrated. However, during this quarter, Rogers sent a ball to Allen Lazard which made the Packers’ first touchdown of the game. Jeff Okudah stopped them from getting a two-point conversion, but the Packers were still on the board now. The third quarter ended at 8-6.
The fourth quarter saw an immediate move from the Lions, a pass from Jared Goff to James Mitchell that scored a touchdown. The score was now 15-6, in favor of the Lions. The only point scored after this was a 25-yard field goal by the GB Packers, putting the score at 15-9. After interceptions caused moves made by both the Packers and the Lions to fail, the score didn’t budge for the rest of the game.
Overall, the game was a frustrating failure for quarterback Aaron Rodgers and a successful opening to the football career for Shane Zylstra. The Lions made three interceptions and defended nine passes. Despite a failed play in the last quarter, they made enough defensive moves to win. This game marked the fifth consecutive loss for the Packers.
