Ellen Martinsson by Maggie Loomis
Ellen Martinsson is one of the ten exchange students at Saugatuck this year! Ellen is from Sweden and is being hosted by the Loomis family. During her time at Saugatuck, Ellen has become a very involved student. She has been a part of the girl’s JV volleyball team, the girl’s Varsity basketball team, the Interact club, Spirit crew, and the girl’s soccer team.
During an interview with Ellen, she discussed her plans for next year and for the future: “I'm going back to Sweden at the end of this school year and then I'm gonna spend my summer with my friends and my family. I'm also going to work and travel. In August I will start my second year of Swedish High School. We have 13 years of school in Sweden, so when I come back I will have 2 more years. I'm not that excited to start school because it's a lot harder in Sweden, even though we don't have that much homework. I'm also going to start in a new class with the grade one year younger than me.” It seems like Ellen will have a fun summer, although she is dreading next school year.
Ellen explains that she has had a great exchange year. She has enjoyed every minute of it and truly cherished every friendship she has made. During the interview she was asked to give the underclassmen some advice: “My best advice for underclassmen is to enjoy every moment because it goes by SOOOO FAST. I know it doesn't feel like that at the moment, but I promise you, when your senior year comes around you are going to realize how fast your 4 years of high school actually went by and that all of it is soon going to be over.” This is very valuable advice and reminds everybody to live in the moment.
Ellen was asked about her exchange year experience. She seems to be really enjoying her year here in the United States. This is what she said about her favorite parts: “The best parts of my exchange year are definitely the people! My host family, my friends, my teammates, the teachers, and everyone else. My exchange year has been amazing so far and I'm so excited for these last months here.” Although she really likes it here in the U.S., she has talked about some major differences between the two countries: “The culture, the food, and the school are 3 major differences.” Even though she is enjoying her year, it’s quite different! That's all, for Saugatuck senior: Ellen Martinsson.
