Cookies on Christmas by Anna Sina Moellers
Every family has a holiday tradition that they follow during the Christmas season. Baking Christmas cookies is mostly one of them. Not only is the design in the foreground, the shared experience of creating something with your own hands is also a lot of fun. Beautiful memories are often associated with this tradition: Christmas scents, sticky fingers, soft Christmas music in the background, and of course the secret snacking on the raw dough. Who doesn't have fun with that?
Families have often baked cookies in the past, so this tradition has existed for many decades. In the beginning, the Christmas cookies were not only used to eat them, but also to decorate the Christmas tree. In many places, in addition to candles and small wooden or glass figures, there were also homemade cookies hanging on the tree.
In the past, gifts were not distributed by Santa Claus, as they are today, but by St. Nicholas. He especially helped poor people. According to legend, he is said to have given a poor father three balls of gold with which he was supposed to save his daughters. Every year, people honor this legend by hanging three balls. Later, the typical apples emerged from this, to which Christmas biscuits were added over the years.
Especially for families with children, the annual baking at Christmas time is a great experience that everyone involved will remember for the rest of their lives. Parents roll out the dough so the children can cut out the cookies. The baking of Christmas cookies thus becomes a shared tradition that brings a lot of joy. At the same time, tasty treats are created that are not only suitable for snacking on, but also for giving as gifts or, in the classic way, for decorating the Christmas tree.
