Who is Ellen Martinsson? by Daniela Nkurunziza
Ellen Martinsson is an foreign exchange student from Sweden this year at Saugatuck High School. Ellen is sixteen years old and is turning seventeen on December 23rd. She has been here at Saugatuck since August 26.Ellen is staying with the Loomis family. Fun fact : she has a little sister named Maggie Loomis who is a freshman this year at Saugatuck High School. Both of them are playing volleyball on the JV team. Ellen told me that she really likes playing volleyball, learning how to play a completely new sport is fun. I can totally agree with her since I joined the varsity volleyball team too!
Ellen has played soccer in her home country for many years. She really likes playing soccer and she is looking forward to playing soccer in the spring season. She likes being around people. She is a really nice, open and helpful person.
So do not be shy talking to her!
Ellen is also really excited about the upcoming basketball season. She
never played before and is looking forward to learning how to play basketball.
Right now she is taking classes like English 11 A, US History, Fitness for life, biology and journalism.”My favorite subjects are gym with Mrs. Austin and Biology with Mr. Smit. Both of the classes are fun. The gym class is really fun and not hard at all. And the biology class is fun and interesting and not too hard either.”
I asked Ellen also about how she feels about Saugatuck and what she loves about living in Saugatuck, and she answered me: “I really like Saugatuck. Before I got here I didn’t really know what to think. I live in a village in Sweden and when I knew I was going to a small town I thought it was something that would fit me well. I love my host family and I love all my friends here. I do miss my family and friends in Sweden though. My favorite part about Saugatuck is definitely the people! All my classmates, teammates, and even the teachers. I love the teachers here. Being able to joke with our teacher is something that doesn’t happen in Sweden.”
If you see Ellen in the hallway don’t be shy and talk to her. She would love to meet new people!
