Basketball Season is Here! by Haley Rivera
November 14th was a very special day for some of our girl basketball players. This day marked the start of our Girls Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball season. This Monday, the girls started off their season with their first regular practice. The week was shown to be filled pretty heavily with a two hour practice each day, even including this Saturday.
On Saturday, November 19th, the girls are hosting a babysitting fundraiser in the high school gymnasium from 6 to 11pm. The team is relying on donations to provide them with enough funds to purchase new travel attire for the entire team. The children are required to be 6 years old and up and can come to the school and spend some time with the varsity girls. There is no cost for the children to come; the team is relying solely on donations and are doing this voluntarily.
This year, both the junior varsity and varsity teams are pretty decent in size, number wise. Last year, the girls varsity team only had 9 girls playing. This year, the girls have 16 are attempting to play this upcoming season. There are even 5 exchange students who are planning on playing this year.
The MHSAA has made the executive decision to shorten the girls basketball season. Districts are now being held at the end of February instead of the beginning of March. Despite this, the association has made the executive decision to add two more games to the girls varsity regular season. This means that the teams aren’t limited to play 20 games during the regular season, they are now asked to play in 22 games. This leaves all teams in the state with busy schedules and extremely full weeks ahead.
The girls are planning on practice everyday after school with their first scrimmage coming up on November 21. Before that, on November 20th, the Girls Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball teams are traveling, asVarsity head coach, Kevin Tringali, has made arrangements so the girls and their family are able to attend the Notre Dame vs Ball State Women’s Basketball game at Notre Dame. The game is scheduled to start at 4 pm and the team plans to travel together.
