Not Calling Snow Days by Sabrie Sneller
This week, Michigan has shown us the real weather that it has to bring. However, Dr. Travis is not calling for snow days. Many parents and kids are upset with him.
One unnamed parent is very upset with today’s (1/16) uncalled snow day, saying: “Saugatuck Public Schools, I wonder what your motives are for canceling school last week when it was completely clear but not today… Clearly the kids' safety is not your consideration.”
Senior Landen Miller, a student who got in a car accident today, is also very disappointed in the lack of a snow day. He said, “I could have easily not gone to school today, but Dr. Travis had other plans. I ended up crashing, thank you Dr. Travis!!”
Junior Charlotte Gardner said, “When I saw the weather last night and this morning, it looked as though we were going to have a snow day because the road conditions were terrible. I think this is a learning experience for everyone, and if this happens in the future, I believe we should have a snow day.”
Another Junior, Carter Miller, was certainly not happy. “Personally, I think this is outrageous. Coming from a person who just got in a very serious accident due to the weather, I think these ‘no calls’ are super dangerous. I have PTSD on the road, how do you expect me to want to wake up in the morning and drive to school in weather like this? There is one word that describes my feelings: disappointed.”
Another thing to add is that many teachers talked about how it was an awful call on having school because they were worried about the safety of their students. However, it is apparent that their voices and opinions are irrelevant.
Many students get anxiety and fear while driving, and having this Michigan weather with 0 degrees and below makes the school freezing. The blizzard with the winds make driving very difficult. While everybody has strong feelings on this matter, it could just be the heat of a moment that makes students and adults feel so strongly.Any students, parents, and even teachers are very upset. Many hope for better calls in the future.
