NHS Peanut Butter Drive by Sophie Kuipers
For the month of February this year, Saugatuck High School’s National Honor Society is having a Peanut Butter Drive! Through the end of the month, members of NHS are bringing in jars of Peanut Butter for Christian Neighbors. Christian Neighbors helps a lot in the community, and all the events we work with them on are in support of a food kitchen for the Saugatuck and Douglas area.
Although this may be the NHS’s first year doing the Peanut Butter Drive, there are many other efforts that they work with Christian Neighbors on, such as the Turkey Toss earlier this year for Thanksgiving. For that event, NHS members worked with Christian Neighbors to get food together for families in the community for Thanksgiving. This included bagging apples and pears, counting donuts from Cranes, and many other efforts to get items together for the community.
A major part of being in NHS is being involved with the community, both by simply engaging in it and giving acts of service to help better it. Maya Veldt, a Senior, and Mr. Smit, who has recently become the new staff sponsor of NHS, had a discussion about the Peanut Butter Drive and decided that it would be a great opportunity for NHS to engage in.
Students that are a part of NHS also feel like it is a great thing for Saugatuck to take part in. One student stated that doing something as easy as bringing in a jar of peanut butter felt like a great way to contribute to the community, and that they were really happy to do it.
Overall, this year’s Peanut Butter Drive that the National Honor Society is doing with Christian Neighbors is a great way to help out in the community, which is a big value of both NHS and Saugatuck!
