Christmas is Coming! by Natalie Tuckerman
It seems like Christmas might have come a bit early for us in Saugatuck, with the snow already here. For many, snow is synonymous with Christmas. There is something magical about seeing streets, buildings, and trees covered with a white blanket of snow. Whether or not you are ready to celebrate quite yet, it is inevitable that Christmas is just around the corner. To get an idea of how people are feeling about celebrating Christmas a bit early, I asked students at Saugatuck High School what their thoughts were.
To start, Anna DeYoung, who is a senior at Saugatuck, had a lot to say about her excitement for the holidays. She said, “I am so excited to celebrate Christmas. The only downside is that I am terrified of the icy roads. So, I am looking forward to staying inside as much as possible. I will be putting on my Christmas pajamas, building a gingerbread house, watching the movie The Santa Clause, drinking a hot chocolate, and lighting my sugar cookie candle. My idea of Christmas is wearing a seasonal red dress and galloping around Grand Rapids. I would love to go to Chicago this Friday on our half day to see the tree lighting.” As you can see, Anna has a lot of ideas for what to do during the holidays and many can relate.
Next, I asked Will Ayers if he is ready to decorate for the holidays. He said, “This past week, my mom and I put up our Christmas lights outside. We wrapped the pillars in the front of my house and wrapped the fence at the back of my house with white Christmas lights. Although we don’t put up our Christmas tree and the rest of our Christmas decorations up until after Thanksgiving, it was still really exciting to put up our Christmas lights and get the feeling that winter and Christmas are coming and around the corner. This past week, when it first snowed, I was also really excited because it gave me a glimpse of what winter and Christmas feels like.
The last person who I talked to was Elsa Dean. She was very excited to give me her thoughts on what she will be doing for this time of the year. Elsa said, “I am super excited to see Christmas lights and decorations. I am also excited to listen to Christmas music and watch Christmas movies. I am going to see the tree lighting in Grand Rapids and go ice skating there too, which will be super fun and festive. Overall, I’m so excited to spend time with my family and my friends during this season of good tidings.”
November and December are great times to celebrate the season of winter and the holidays. Don’t be a Grinch; and start celebrating to have a happy holiday season.
