Future Careers by Chloe Carney
As our society continues to grow, we gain valuable insights into the future of work and what it holds for the next generation of the workforce. I have interviewed 3 amazing women whose diverse backgrounds represent the multifaceted nature of the workforce. The purpose of this interview was to provide a platform for discourse on the evolution of careers, to understand the impact of technological and societal changes on employment, and to offer guidance to those navigating the complexities of the job market.
Lexie Grotler, 17, is a senior here at Saugatuck High School. She says she is excited to graduate and go into the field of Forensic Anthropology and Law. Forensic anthropologists analyze human remains to determine factors such as age, gender, ancestry, and cause of death. “Basically the goal in the end is to work for the FBI and in a law firm,” she says. She said the reason she wanted to start in this career was because she wanted to help people while also not being involved with a lot of interaction, this way she could work in the labs and possibly in courtrooms with cases. I asked her if she was going to move to more crime dense areas, then and she said, “Once I finish schooling, I’ll end up moving out to wherever I have the most opportunities for a job in either field to start with. So I would end up moving out to either California or Colorado, depending on where school takes me.” She will be studying at Grand Rapids Community College.
Sabrie Sneller, 18, is also a senior here at Saugatuck High School. Once she graduates, she is going into Cosmetology. A Cosmetologist is a professional at beauty treatments, including hair styling, makeup, skincare, waxing, nails, and eyelashes. “I am super excited to start because I have been in love with cosmetology since the age of six!” she says. She said she chose to go in this career path because she wants men and women to love themself on the inside while also feeling beautiful on the outside, making them feel better about themselves. She says she will be staying in Holland and living at home with her dog. I asked her what kind of services she will be offering and she said, “I will be doing waxing, hair, nails, lashes! The first 12 weeks I’ll be in class full time and then I’ll make my Instagram account, and then I’ll be taking clients with me wherever I go!” She will be attending The Salon Professional Academy starting May 28 of this year and graduating in April or May of next year.
Isabel Noguera, 18, is another senior at Saugatuck High School. Upon graduating, she is going to be studying Environmental Science. An Environmental scientist studies the environment, figures out how human actions impact nature, and comes up with solutions to problems. “I realized I really wanted to get involved in this field after I took AP environmental science with Mr. Smit during my junior year. We went on various field trips and did a lot of hands-on testing, and I really gravitated towards that type of work,” she says. She is also known among the school for her music, which she says she plans on minoring in as well. “A lot of my livelihood comes from being involved in songwriting and choirs, so I wanted to incorporate that into my future,” she said. She also stated that she wants to stay in Michigan for the lakes in which she could have many jobs and study, but would also love to experience other places as well. She will be attending Central Michigan University.
