Palette: The Cosmetology School by Andreas Rodriguez-Kupres
Many don't know it, but there is an amazing salon and school right by us. The cosmetology school is located right across from the Root Beer Barrel in Douglas; it is typically open from 9 am to 4:30 pm. A student at the school was interviewed and asked about what it’s like going to school there and what days typically look like.
Madeline Jelosmeno, a student at Palette, was asked what the teaching environment there is like. She stated, “Very hands-on and personal, there are only 10 students and 3 teachers, so everyone gets the help they need. When there are clients, they walk you through a consultation and you tell them what your plans are for that client. The teacher then approves and you are set to get working on the client. They are very encouraging and always there if you have a question or need something.”
The founder of Palette believes in the constant learning and growth of each artist which was felt when speaking with Madeline. She seemed to be very knowledgeable and trustworthy in her work. When asked about what typical days there look like, Madeline stated, “I get there around 9 and we all have a debriefing of the day, we get to see the schedule of the day and what clients we are going to have. We then set up our stations, and wait for our clients to arrive. . . when waiting for our clients we can practice on mannequins, do other homework, practice on our peers, or work on theory.” Theory you may ask? Yes, theory. Cosmetology students do theory. The theory is essentially the students learning workbooks; it’s a cosmetology book filled with all the things they need to know to get their license as a cosmetologist. The book is filled with all the rules and regulations they must follow, such as covid protocols, and all the things they need to know for their license test. That may include how to do a blowout, how to dye hair, how to cut hair, and so on. When asked whether or not she feels that she is learning things she will need to have a real cosmetology job she stated, “For sure, that’s one of the reasons I chose Palette, they teach you things you need to know; they teach you real things.”
The school has a 10-month program in which the artist is there 9-4:30, 5 days a week, meaning they work and learn 40 hours a week. That then adds up to a total of 1500 hours at the end of 10 months to get their license. The test is essentially the final thing they need to do to get their license so they may go work in other salons. The costs of getting your hair done is reduced since these artists are still learning and don't have their license yet. They do both men and women’s hair.
