NHS Turkey Toss by Mallory Hass
Each year, National Honors Society students at Saugatuck High School participate in Christian Neighbor’s Turkey Toss, an event run by volunteers that provides food for lower-income families for the holidays. Christian Neighbors is a volunteer organization based in Plainwell, MI that works to provide low-income families with food, appropriate emergency care, and other goods and services.
National Honors Society at Saugatuck High School is a group of students who take part in volunteer work within the community. New NHS members undergo an induction process in the spring of their sophomore year, allowing them to participate in service projects and volunteer events throughout their junior and senior years in high school. NHS students helped with The Turkey Toss this year, which took place at the Community Church of Douglas. Over thirty members of NHS from the high school worked with a large number of volunteers from Christian Neighbors to separate food, help members of families “shop” for their groceries, and count food, as well as help members load the food into their cars.
The Turkey Toss is one of the earlier volunteering events of the year. Still, other students are encouraged to take part in other volunteer opportunities either through the school and the proctors at the school, or opportunities that they find outside of school. Some volunteer opportunities from the past include planting grasses, beach cleanups, and helping out with local events.
This year, the Turkey Toss provided nearly 370 families with food for Thanksgiving. This was comparable to the amount of families that were serviced last year as well, which is considered a success! Families that came in would get to pick out canned vegetables, cake, frosting, either a turkey or a chicken (depending on the size of the family), potatoes, pears, bread, dairy products, and produce. They would work their way down a line and gather different types of foods from table to table.
Thank you to all who helped out at this year’s Turkey Toss. We hope to have an even more successful time at the event next year!
