End of the Football Season in the Perspective of a Senior by Nathan Schaefer
This year's Saugatuck Football season was a little disappointing in some eyes. This is mainly due to the fact that at one point there were 9 starters injured. As a senior, it was very sad to hear that my season was over after only playing 4 games because of an untimely dislocation. It was very sad to see a team with so much potential fall to injuries game after game after game.
From the perspective of the sidelines, it is especially tough when your team is struggling to do something and you want to help, but you are physically incapable because of something you cannot control. My first full game on the sidelines against the Comstock Colts was especially sad because I saw my fellow senior teammates Jefferson McCluskey and Tribal Cadreau have fun playing a team that we were able to win against without me. That’s when it hit me that the season was over.
The full cancellation of the season was unexpected but necessary for the safety of the Sophomores and Freshman on the team. After homecoming the following week was powerhouse Lawton with a team that is capable of making it to state for the second year in a row and Coach Dunn and the seniors discussed how it was better to cancel the varsity season and try and let the younger kids use this experience to better themselves and improve further. We found a game with a division 6a football team that was a tough competition and we unfortunately lost but it was a great game for them to use and improve. We also rematched Comstock for the last game and beat them by 3 touchdowns so it was a fantastic way to end the season on a high note and I am happy for them.
