The End of Varsity Volleyball by Haley Rivera
On Friday, November 4, the Varsity Volleyball season came to an end. On Thursday, November 3rd, the girls faced Black River at Fennville High School. The team was able to defeat the River Rats in the first three sets with the match overall being very close. The scores were: 25 - 14, 27 - 25, 25 - 20. There was a very supportive student section, as well as a large number of people from the community who came to support the girls during this very well deserved victory. The intensity and energy in the gym was high all night, which only motivated the ladies to push through and come out of the night successfully.
The win on Thursday night gave the team the opportunity to play on Friday too. The girls were faced with the North Muskegon Norsemen, which seemed to be more of a challenge for the team. This match was for the district finals and was also hosted at Fennville High School. Although the players were able to hold with the Norsemen during every set, they weren’t able to come out on top. This was a very emotional loss for the girls, which left many people in the gym in tears. This game marked the last game for our Saugatuck senior volleyball players and many were showing emotion on their faces while they left the gymnasium.
Haley Rivera, a senior on the team, mentioned how despite the loss, she was very happy with how the season ended. She, and many other members of the team, were very upset about the season coming to an end. The girls managed to leave it all out on the court and pushed the Norsemen’s abilities during all three games of the sets.
At this last game, the girls had an entire community backing them up in the stands, from fellow students, school staff, families, and even members of the local community. The gym was incredibly loud for all of the sets, which gave the team the confidence they needed to play and hold with a very competitive team.
Although the last game of the season is always an emotional one— that usually ends with tears no matter the outcome—the girls still had a very successful season.
