E. Jean Carroll Gets $83.3 Million From Trump by Emma Schoonmaker
E. Jean Carroll has been making allegations against Donald Trump for sexually assaulting her and defaming her. Trump repudiated any such idea and has been doing so since 2019, and, to prove his point, he finally agreed to take part in the defamation trial for five days, after refusing to attend last year’s.
Libelous comments were heard coming from Trump during the trial, and Kaplan, Carroll’s lawyer, said his statements only justified her argument that he takes advantage of his position and disregards all rules. On top of this, Trump had the gall to disruptively and rudely walk out of the court while Kaplan said her closing statements and he went well past the tightly restricted three-minute limit for his testimony. Instead of being insulted or exasperated by his behavior, Kaplan has been taking them as a win in her favor, saying that with each ill-mannered and entitled move he makes, Carroll gains a point. A few hours following Trump’s discourteous storm out of court, the jury announced their unanimous decision, including the $83.3 million award for Carroll, not to mention the $5 million award she was given in May.
Carroll has been circulating throughout all of the big news platforms, telling her story. While on camera she has made vows to put her newly earned money towards things that Trump hates, for instance, “a fund for the women who have been sexually assaulted by him.” When Carroll was asked about her feelings about the trial, Carroll said that she was very anxious beforehand, and described a mental breakdown she had where she could not speak, but that once the trial began, her fears diminished and she felt invincible. Carroll said, “It was like he was like nothing, like an emperor without clothes. All my terror leading up to it, and there he is. He's just something in a suit." She said that the only thing that made him powerful was the people around him. It was all a facade that he could not keep up without his supporters. She also went so far as to compare the former president to “a walrus snorting,” and “a rhino flopping his hands.”
That Friday, Trump posted on Truth Social, saying that the U.S. court system was getting out of hand. In addition to this, he claimed that he would appeal the verdict that Carroll was awarded, although he already has so many other trials and cases going on at the moment.
