Lukas Schoonmaker by Marylou Lepron
2023 is the last year of high school for seniors at Saugatuck High School. Graduation is a new start in the big leagues. This departure can be felt in different ways depending on the person. I asked Lukas Schoonmaker, a senior from the 2023 class, to answer some questions about her last year and next year.
What are Lukas’s plans for next year after his graduation? Lukas declared that: “I’m taking 6 months off and going to work full time. Then in January next year I’m going to Perth, Australia and doing mission work for 6 months. Then I’ll come back and go to school at a university.” Indeed, not everyone will take the same route as we think:go to university and graduate. Others devote themselves more to humanitarian work and travel like Lukas.
In the same way, Lukas said that he is also super excited about his future, but also nervous about finances. In fact, everyone takes different paths, that everyone feels differently.
But what are his feelings about his Senior year? “So far I've loved my senior year. It's been like the best time I've had in all of my high school years. If I could change anything, it would be to go back and not let anything stop me from hanging with friends.” Lukas affirmed. Indeed, in life you will have only one senior year, so like Lukas just enjoy it.
We all need advice from the oldest! So I ask Lukas what his advice is for the underclassmen. He said that “Don’t let school and academics keep you from enjoying friends, relationships, as well as other opportunities. Work will always be there, don't let it consume your life.” Good Point! In fact, like Lukas, stay creative and don’t let the school system gnaw at you. You always shine naturally.
After all, Lukas is a senior who has a totally different plan for next year compared to the majority of the seniors in Saugatuck High-School. After peaceful years in high school, he will leave for the unknown to build himself.
