The Powerball by Natalie Tuckerman
The Powerball is an American lottery game that costs only $2 to play. To play, select five numbers from 1 to 69 for the white balls, then select one number from 1 to 26 for the red. You can choose your numbers on a play slip or let the lottery randomly pick your numbers. The Powerball jackpot grows until it is won. Like any other form of gambling, you must be 18 years or older to play.
The jackpot was an estimated $1.9 billion before it was updated Tuesday morning to $2.04 billion, which equates to acash value of $997.6 million. One ticket sold in California matched the five white balls and Powerball to win the jackpot. One ticket sold in Florida matched all five white balls and had the Power Play option to win $2 million. Twenty-two tickets matched the five white balls without the Power Play to win $1 million, including one sold in Michigan.
The next Powerball drawing is scheduled for Wednesday, November 9. Drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday.
My dad, John Tuckerman, buys a ticket for the Powerball every year and is convinced he will win. When I asked him what he would spend his earnings on, he said, “The first thing I would buy is socks and underwear… for the whole family.” He was very pleased with this answer, but I decided to dig deeper and see what he would actually buy. He followed up by claiming he would gift his family a trip to Alaska and fish for halibut and seafood.
To get a better understanding of what people would spend their winnings on,l, I asked Grace Dombrowski, who is a senior at Saugatuck High School. She said, “A trip to Fiji, a really nice house, and a Capybara!” Grace then went on to show pictures of Capybaras.
As you can see, the Powerball is a pretty big deal. What would you buy with your winnings?
