Construction Update by Jessica Richardson-Smaller
As you all know, Saugatuck High School and Middle School are getting redone for the later years to come. Construction started more or less at the middle of the year with the teachers frantically moving things out of their rooms, getting rid of things they could not keep, all with the help of students. So far, the construction team has made tremendous progress on tearing down the old in order to make room to build the new.
As it stands this week, the whole foyer of the school, which used to hold the office, the main hallway, as well as the library, has been bulldozed. The view from the front of the school, if you were to stand in the tennis courts, basically shows a giant open space where a bunch of the classrooms used to be, like Mrs. Austin’s and Mrs. Lewis’s.
Although exciting and fun to look at knowing that in a couple years we will have a brand new, modern looking school with all new classrooms, it is not always such a fun thing. There have been lots of smells that students have had to deal with, some describing it as smelling like “dead fish in the hallways.” There have also been the loud noises that come with the construction, like things falling, or banging on the ground when being moved, making the construction not the most pleasant thing. However, for the most part the students and teachers are eagerly waiting for what the new renovation will turn the school into.
