What is Journalism? by Ella Kuipers
Journalism is an elective that is available to freshmen all the way up to seniors, and it is a writing based class. Journalism is taught by Ms. Lewis this trimester. In journalism, there are many different projects that take place, for instance, there are articles to write like this one, everyone is assigned a page of the yearbook to make and design, and there are podcast days.
Articles are written twice a week by students in the class, and are published to The Orange Crush to keep everyone at Saugatuck public schools updated and informed about school events, sports, and just about any other current events going on. Each individual article is a short passage explaining a chosen topic that helps other students better understand the topic or situation. When writing an article, you can do it many different ways; for example, some articles require interviews from other students or teachers, and some don't, it just depends what the article is about.
Yearbook pages are designed by students based on the yearbooks theme, and the individual yearbook page is worked on throughout the trimester. Majority of the yearbook pages are one page, but there are a few that are two page spreads. Being able to do the yearbook and design a page yourself is a great way to show your creativity and be involved in the yearbook process.
On podcast days, each student will pick their own podcast to listen to, and then analyze it after listening.. There is a sheet to fill out about said podcast. This sheet will be turned in by the end of class. Students can listen to any podcast they want, given it’s school appropriate. They can choose the topic of the podcast and who creates it, which makes it interesting for everyone.
Overall, journalism is a well loved class that is great for giving students the chance to be creative. This class is in general an easy and interesting class, which makes it so fun and well liked. There are many good things about this class, but one of the important things is that it gives students a chance to write about and listen to things that they are interested in, and choose what to learn about and give a chance to teach other students about it.
