Benjamin Majer by Caiden Pearson
Benjamin Majer is an exchange student from Germany. He attends Saugatuck High School and is a part of the 2024 senior graduating class. He disclosed the reason for his experiencing an exchange year here in the United States: his mother made him. He had no choice in his placement, but ended up here in Saugatuck, Michigan. He is pleased with his placement here and thoroughly enjoys the community.
Back in his home country of Germany, he participated in multiple activities outside of school. He likes to hang out with his friends, but also wants to play handball. Another extracurricular activity he participated in included coaching a kids' soccer team. Upon arrival in America, Benny initially couldn't find the right host family for him, but after some moving around during the year, he found it when he moved in with Cliff Lewis, his new host father. During his interview, he expressed his gratitude and how lucky, thankful, and happy he was to live with them. When he left Germany for his exchange year, Benny left a lot behind. He explains that he misses his friends from Germany, but he has slowly adjusted to not seeing them now.
So far, Benny has only met one of his neighbors; nonetheless, he says they are lovely. Benny likes his experience in Saugatuck. He especially enjoys how friendly and welcoming everybody is. Another thing Benny wants about Saugatuck is the easily accessible beaches. Benny explains that he wants the beaches and has noticed a lot of fast food.
Overall, Benny is having a good time here in America. He likes his host family and is hugely thankful for the experience they have provided for him. The school environment and the community are significant factors in Benny’s exchange student experience.
