JV Volleyball by Niki McNeil
This week Wednesday the JV volleyball team played at a conference in Constantine. In this tri, they played both Constantine and Allegan.
The first match was against Constatine. They lost the match in 2 sets, the first set having a score of 13 to 25, and the second set having a score of 21 to 25. In the second match against Allegan, the team won in 3 sets. The first set had a score of 25 to 27, Saugatuck taking the win. In the second set, the girls lost some of their momentum and lost 18 to 25. They regained their energy, however, in the third set and won 15 to 13.
The girls were very excited coming into these games, especially with the return of defensive player Avery Sanders. Avery is a freshman this year, and is new to Saugatuck. She was injured early on in the season, and hasn’t been able to play in any of the games up to this point. According to the girls, Avery came to every practice, and was amazing at supporting the team throughout the term of her injury, and they were all very excited to be able to play with her again.
When asked about how she thought the games went, freshman Maggie Loomis said: “I think we did so good. We really worked hard and it showed. Our middles and setters collaborated for some great quick balls, and we had some great back row attacks. Overall, our hitters were really good with outside and right side, sealing the deal. Our defense was good, with some great dives and good hustle. I was really excited to see Avery Sanders play after being out from an injury all season. She did amazing, as did everyone. Both games were fun and intense and everybody did so good.”
Another freshman, Cecilia Atkins, responded to the same question by stating: “Today we did incredibly well! We had some really good quick balls with our middles, and they got a lot of kills. Defense was great at hustling to the ball and covering hitters. Overall, we did great as a team and it was really fun playing.”
The team’s setter, sophomore Maeve Wrenn responded by saying: ”I think we did very good. I was very proud of Avery Sander, after coming off of an injury she got two kills! Our covering of our hitters was super good, we hit a lot of a’s (quick balls) tonight, giving our middles, Niki and Maggie, a lot of kills. Overall I’m super happy!”
