Indoor Track Looking For Throwers by Luke Barde
Many new sports sneak into the spotlight with fall sports out of the way. One of these is indoor track and field. Track and field offers plenty of opportunities to meet new people, get in shape, and feel that you are a part of something and not just anything: you’re part of a team. However, one field event is especially in need: shot put and discus.
Throwing is a field event where you either throw a large 8lb ball or a 4lb disc. Throughout the winter season, throwers practice by lifting weights and doing agility workouts. Now it may sound like a lot of work, and if you want to be the best, it is. Although, it's not all work and no play. The throwers team is undoubtedly the closest team in track and field. They form close bonds in the hours they spend together throughout the year. The team becomes a place where many feel welcome to share and laugh.
Not only is the team welcoming and enjoyable to be around, but the coach, Drew Jameson, is no stranger to being a friend. Even though he may be the coach and wants you to reach your absolute best potential, he finds no trouble in separating the well-being of his players from the sport.
With a welcoming coach and a welcoming team, why wouldn't you want to stop by just to check it out? You can find them in the foyer around 3:30 after school. Come stop by and introduce yourself. And hey, if you find out it's not for you, no hard feelings. But there is no shame in trying. With an experienced upperclassman and an amazing coach, you'll find that getting the hang of it all will come easily with time. As a message from the throwing team, “Come by, eat some food, sleep, and throw.”
