Sophia Plaggemars by Mallory Hass
Sophia Plaggemars is a new student at Saugatuck for the 2023-2024 school year. She transferred at the beginning of the year from Glenn Schools in Southern Michigan, and she is enjoying her time in the 6th grade at Saugatuck so far. Glenn is a lot smaller than Saugatuck, with an average of only about 40 students from Kindergarten to 6th grade. Douglas Elementary School, on the other hand, has about 350 students from Kindergarten to 6th grade. Sophia was used to being taught in a small 3-room schoolhouse at one of the smallest public schools in this part of the state. She said that her least favorite thing about attending Saugatuck is how large it is, which is rare to hear! She loves how nice everyone is around her and said that even as a new student, people greeted her with kind words on her first day.
Sophia’s favorite class is Art and she is looking forward to taking another art class. She said that when she transferred, she was scared of not being able to find where her classes were. She was also afraid of not being able to make it to her classes at the right time, which is a normal thing to feel nervous about when coming into 6th grade, especially after transferring from a smaller school. Her transition from Glenn to Saugatuck was a little bit bumpy, as she struggled to navigate the school, because it is much larger than what she was used to. Props to Sophia for finding her way around, as that couldn’t have been easy!
What she misses most about attending Glenn is her friends. Unfortunately, she doesn’t see them very often, despite Glenn being less than an hour away. She also misses how small Glenn was, though Saugatuck is one of the smaller schools in the area. We look forward to seeing Sophia around the school. Thank you, Sophia!
