Olympic Skater Disqualified From Olympics, Results are Finally Decided by Kamryn Sixberry
In 2022 a Russian figure skater by the name of Kamila Valieva was disqualified from the Olympics at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing. Before being disqualified, Russia earned the gold medal at the Olympics with the U.S. then Canada falling short behind the country.
After Kamila was caught cheating at the Olympics, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee has finally heard word this year that they will be receiving the gold medal for the Winter Olympic Games of 2022. Being sent an email from the IOC, who also said “great sympathy with the athletes who had to wait for two years to get the final results of their competition. The IOC will contact the respective (National Olympic Committees) in order to organize a dignified Olympic medal ceremony.” The Americans that will receive gold medals are Evan Bates, Karen Chen, Nathan Chen, Madison Chock, Zachary Donohue, Brandon Frazier, Madison Hubbell, Alexa Knierim, and Vincent Zhou.
After the disqualification of Kamila Valieva, Japan went from getting bronze medals to getting silver after ten points were taken off for each of Kamila’s events. Still after Kamila being disqualified from the Olympics, Russia got the bronze medal with Canada placing fourth place instead of third, still not getting any medals.
The choice of Russia getting bronze instead of Canada got immediately questioned by Skate Canada the national governing body for figure skating. They cited rule 353(4)(a) of the ISU’s technical rules that stated “Disqualified competitors will lose their placements and be officially noted in the intermediate and final results as disqualified (DSQ). Competitors having finished the competition and who initially placed lower than the disqualified competitor(s) will move up accordingly in their placement(s).” If this were to happen and every woman behind Kamila would be moved up a place Canada would have exactly one more point in total than Russia, which would leave Canada in third place.
Plenty of people think that it is unfair for Russia to still get the bronze medal even after one of their skaters got disqualified from the Olympics for four years and think that Canada rightly deserves the bronze medal.
