Britain’s New Prime Minister by Elsa Dean
Liz Truss has been the prime minister of the UK for the past 6 weeks, but she has now resigned. Many things led to her resignation. When she entered office, the British economy was already in shambles. Energy bills were predicted to jump 80%, and many citizens, already affected by inflation, would not be able to heat their homes this winter. Liz Truss seemed to only make these problems worse, with announced tax cuts and other unwelcome policies. These announcements scared investors so much that the value of the British pound dropped to be equal to the U.S. dollar. In response, Truss decided to reverse her plans but ended up losing all of her political credibility.
Liz Truss has now resigned, and Rishi Sunak has been elected the new prime minister. Sunak is 42 years old, born to Indian parents who immigrated to Britain in the 1960s from Africa. He is making history as the first prime minister of color. Rishi Sunak is a conservative. The conservative party in Britain is center-right and favors free market economics. Rishi Sunak is married to the daughter of an Indian billionaire, and together they are the 222nd richest people in Britain. His financial standing has brought criticism, with many saying that he is out of touch with the people of Britain, who are reeling from the effects of high inflation.
Rishi Sunak said this about his new role: “Mistakes were made, not borne of ill will or bad intentions. Quite the opposite, in fact. But mistakes, nonetheless. And I have been elected as leader of my party, and your prime minister, in part, to fix them.”
