Volleyball Seniors Reflect on the Season by Sabrie Sneller
Saugatuck had six seniors this year on the varsity volleyball team. This year’s volleyball team was an amazing group of girls who stuck together throughout a rollercoaster of a season. We interviewed them about how their season went.
The six volleyball seniors were all asked the following questions and you will get to see how they responded to them:
What was your overall feeling of the volleyball season?
What was your favorite memory?
What are your plans for after high school?
What's your favorite drill in practice?
What will you miss the most?
What will you take away from volleyball into your everyday life?
What are some wise words for the younger generation of volleyball players?
First, Jenn Schock was asked the questions and this is how Jenn had replied: “My overall feeling is grateful. My favorite memory is learning the Snell drill.” Jenn said that she is probably going to community college to save money for a 4-year college. She also said that the Snell drill is her favorite drill.“I will miss playing one of my favorite sports and my pepper partner.” Jenn said that she would carry with her the mentality she built throughout her years in volleyball. Her wise words for players joining volleyball are: “It’s going to be hard, but if it was easy, everyone would do it. You can do anything that you put your mind to.”
Then, Faith Czarnecki was asked the questions and this is how she replied:
“My overall feeling was that we had the most fun at practice and it felt like a big family. When the season ended I was sad to not see these girls everyday. My favorite memory has got to be the fun Friday where we could do team building drills. After high school, I want to go to Western Michigan University to study education. My favorite drill was the Snell, obviously. I miss the team’s family-feel the most. I will take away from volleyball how to be mentally tough and how to shake the bad off.” Faith’s wise words that she’s like to pass on are: “Just have fun; don’t worry about the coaches or the stands.”
Sabrie Sneller was asked these questions next. She answered the following: “My overall feeling of the season was that we actually played well. Yes, we did have quite some upsets and downs and a rough patch through the season, but once it was taken care of we played as a team and the girls all got super close and it felt like a family. I feel as if that’s what a team should feel like. My favorite memory from the season was either having to do the drill that the coach had to make after me, called “the Snell" or having the senior girls over for dinner and a campfire. After high school I plan to continue on with cosmology at The Salon Professional Academy! My favorite drill was the Snell or doing 21-18 because it was a big mental game. From this sport, I will take away that you need to be yourself and you can’t have others tell you how to be or what to do. I will definitely miss playing with Jenn and Faith, as I got super close to them this year and they made me have a lot of fun. I will take with me that you need to be a goldfish because in a bit it won’t matter anymore.” Sabrie’s message to new volleyball players is as follows: “You need to work hard all the time, even when the coaches aren’t watching. Just because you had a bad day at school doesn’t mean that you can bring it to practice. Volleyball is a great escape from all the outside distractions.”
Next, Hanna Walker was asked the questions and this is how she replied: “I had so much fun this volleyball season and got really close with all the seniors! I loved when we played Martin. The atmosphere and the energy was such an amazing experience. As of right now, I do not know where I will be attending college, but I certainly will be. My favorite drill was obviously Queens. I will definitely miss being able to share the court with my closest friends. I think the closeness and teamwork is something that I will take into my everyday life.”
Jacey Merkle replied with: “I thought the volleyball season went really well. We all worked together to create such a fun atmosphere for our last season on the court. My favorite memory was when we beat Schoolcraft for the first time in school history. Although I’m not sure where I’m going to go to college, I plan on majoring in political science as a pathway to law school. My favorite drill is Russian because it is so fast-paced and fun. I will miss playing with all the girls on the volleyball team. I had the best season I’ve ever had. My biggest takeaway from volleyball is persevering to reach your goal because it is important to never give up. To all the young volleyball players, I’d say to just enjoy it while it lasts.”
Last but not least, Elsa Nor was given the questions and this is how she responded: “I thought the volleyball season went really well. We all worked together for fun last season. My favorite memory was when we beat Schoolcraft for the first time in school history. Although I’m not sure where I’m going to go to college, I plan on majoring in computer science. My favorite drill is Russian because it requires us to think ahead to determine what position we will need to play. I will miss the sport in general. My biggest takeaway from volleyball is communication because it is important for everyone to be successful on the court, and in life. As for the younger volleyball players, they just need to realize it goes by fast.”
