Christmas Movies by Benny Majer
Christmas is almost here! But since there’s not a lot of snow, and it's supposed to be 50° on Christmas evening and Christmas day, we have to keep the spirit alive with something else: Movies!
Everybody loves Christmas movies, and everybody knows a lot of them. Some really famous ones would be Elf, The Grinch or A Christmas Carol. But the list of Christmas movies is getting so long, that I don’t even know what to watch anymore. So I tried to find out which Christmas movie is the best and also which one is the most popular. To find this out, I looked at a ranking of the highest grossing Christmas movies.
It turns out, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch is the highest grossing Christmas movie ever, with almost $550 Million in revenue. The Home Alone Franchise though has more gross than the Grinch Franchise with almost one billion dollars.
But just because these movies and franchises made the most money, it doesn’t mean that they’re the most popular or the best. The movie Elf is about a toddler who was accidentally shipped to the North Pole and raised as an elf. As he’s a grown man, he’s traveling to New York City to find his real father, leading to increasingly chaotic results. The movie Elf is the most watched one this year, with already 9 million views across U.S. households this season.
I couldn’t find an actual ranking on the most viewed Christmas movie of all time, but a lot of websites claim that a movie called It’s a Wonderful Life published in 1946 is the best and most viewed Christmas movie ever. It’s a Wonderful Life is an American Christmas drama. The movie is about a man named George Bailey thinking about ending his life. As his families and friends' prayers reach his guardian angel Clarence, Clarence and the other angels think about how they could help him. While they discuss what to do, we see flashbacks from all of the good deeds that George Bailey has done in his life, like saving his little brother from drowning, or preventing the pharmacist from accidentally poisoning his customer. Then, after thinking about everything, George stands at the edge of a bridge and is about to jump. If he’s going to jump or not, you’ll have to find out for yourself!
