Girls Soccer Season Starting! by Annie Molenhouse
After weeks of preseason workouts, Monday, March 13 marks the start of the girls soccer season and normal practices will finally start to get ready for this year's season. Being back to back district champs, the girls hope to have another great season and district win under their belt. This year is very exciting because 35 girls are trying out for the team. Because of this large number, we will be having a JV team as well.
The first game of the varsity season is at home game against Zion Christian on March 24, and the first game for the JV is also a home game against Hamilton on March 27. The varsity season will contain 19 games not including districts, and JV will have 10 games.
Charlotte Gardner, a Saugatuck soccer player, said when asked about the season: “I’m very excited for this year as a sophomore we have large shoes to fill, but I think it's going to go great.”
Sage Larsen, another Saugatuck soccer player, said when asked about the season: “I honestly think we’re gonna do good this season. Being a freshman last year, it was a big jump from middle school level to high school level. I’m confident that having a JV will make that change easier for the current and upcoming freshmen and sophomores. But overall, I think with the amount of girls we have this year we will be able to accomplish a lot ,and I would encourage anyone no matter their skill level to come out and play.”
This year Saugatuck will be hosting the district games for girls soccer. Many of the players are excited about this because our school has a turf field, whereas last year the field they played on was grass and it wasn’t the nicest.
There are lots of very good seniors on the team this year and younger players will have to step up and practice hard to be able to fill their spots for the next season. Overall, it seems like a lot of excitement from players and their coach and lots of confidence that they will win districts again!
