World Cultures and Languages Club Trip by Sophie Kuipers
World Cultures and Languages Club is a club where those who participate get the opportunity to learn all about other languages and cultures! The club is run by students Lilliana Aumaugher and Layla Vinten-Johansen, as well as Mrs. Bauer. This year, students went on the club’s first field trip of the year before break! For this trip, the club left in the morning to go to Holland. There, they visited The Boba House and the Holland Supermarket in the Huynh Plaza. Afterward, the club had lunch at 2 Dragons, an Asian buffet restaurant that serves Thai and Laotian food. The final two stops for the trip consisted of a supermarket and bakery. The supermarket, Supermercado La Excelencia, carried many traditional Hispanic foods and other items, from piñatas to different types of peppers and ice cream. The bakery, Ramirez Bakery, had many different baked goods from cakes to empanadas and much more.
This field trip was educational, but also quite enjoyed by everyone in the club! Getting to go to Holland and visit different establishments and restaurants allowed everyone to try new things and learn about other cultures, which is what the World Language and Cultures Club is all about.
World Cultures and Languages Club meets every other Monday in Mrs. Bauer’s room. We’ll typically do feasts, Kahoots, presentations, and more based on the culture we are studying that week. Trips like these really bring home what we learn about in the club, while also making it fun and interesting! World Cultures and Languages Club gets two field trips a year, so there will be another one this spring in Grand Rapids. There, we’ll be able to continue to explore other cultures and languages, especially ones you can’t really find around this area.
