2024 Star Wars TV Shows by Benjamin Schoonmaker
After the resolution of the Skywalker Saga in 2019, Lucasfilms shifted its creative direction towards the TV show industry. Disney had long planned the change, as it launched its own streaming service just a month before wrapping up the last Star Wars trilogy. Since then, five live-action and two major animated series by Lucasfilms have streamed on Disney+; meanwhile, no Star Wars movies have been released. Almost all of the shows are ongoing, and over three are releasing content this year.
The Mandalorian premiered upon the Disney+ launch and very quickly became iconic in pop culture. Everything from the catchy opening theme to the adorable sidekick, Grogu, made fans fall in love with the series. Andor received a 96% from Rotten Tomatoes; furthermore, Kenobi, Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, The Clone Wars, and The Bad Batch all received over 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and above 7/10 for IMDB. Despite the many critics of recent Star Wars works, the entertainment industry has liked what Disney has made in its Lucasfilms division.
Lucasfilms’s grind continues this year with one animated and three live-action releases. The Bad Batch’s final season comes out this week and has fans both excited and sad to think of the series ending. Lucasfilms has most likely made the best 3D animated shows recently for Disney, with no Marvel or Pixar 3D animated series comparing to the effort and time put into the seventh season of The Clone Wars and the two seasons of The Bad Batch.
Moving to the live-action series, Skeleton Crew is set around the same time of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, which is just after the 1977 original trilogy. It will be a story about a group of children who travel the galaxy after getting lost, and their journey trying to get back home. The miniseries will likely have a feel of its own as the plot is very different from any other Star Wars work in the past. The stakes appear to be much smaller, with the focus being on a few individuals, rather than grand planetary battles or layered galactic politics.
The Acolyte is the first project to depict canon events in the Star Wars universe outside of the Skywalker Saga, with the exception being a few older and smaller animated projects. It will take place a century before the prequel movies, giving background to the underlying plot in the 1999 trilogy. It is definitely new territory for Lucasfilms, a reflection of moving away from the saga. Andor’s second season is scheduled for August, and much of the Star Wars fanbase is anticipating the continuation of the griddy series.
Those who enjoy what Lucasfilms has been putting out have a lot to look forward to. Additionally, over four films are planned for 2025 and 2026, which will be the first time Star Wars features in theaters in over half a decade.
